Best man speech structure: a UK template that works
By the speechwriters.ai editorial team · Last updated
A tried-and-tested running order for a British best man speech, with timings, sample lines for each section, and what to leave out.
The best man usually speaks last at a British wedding, after the father of the bride and the groom. That's both a gift and a burden. The room is warm and ready to laugh, but it has already sat through two speeches and the bar is calling. Your job is to be the fun one without becoming the one people talk about for the wrong reasons. A clear structure is the single biggest thing that separates a speech people remember fondly from one they endure.
Below is a running order that works for almost every British wedding, from a village hall to a country house. Treat the timings as a guide: the whole thing should come in at 5–7 minutes, which is roughly 650–900 words at a relaxed speaking pace.
The running order at a glance
| Part | Time | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Opening and introduction | 30–45 s | Settles your nerves and tells the room who you are |
| 2. Thank-yous | 30 s | Replies on behalf of the bridesmaids; picks up anyone missed |
| 3. The groom: who he is | 2–3 min | Two or three stories that show his character |
| 4. The couple | 1–1½ min | How they met and why they work |
| 5. The sincere moment | 30–45 s | What the friendship means to you |
| 6. The toast | 15 s | Everyone stands, glasses up, you sit down |
1. The opening
Start by saying who you are and how you know the groom. Half the room – the bride's side, the older relatives, the plus-ones – won't know. Then give yourself an easy first laugh to settle your nerves. A gentle, self-deprecating line works far better than a joke lifted from the internet; guests have heard "I've been told to speak for no longer than the groom lasts in bed" at more weddings than they'd like.
Sample lines:
- "Good afternoon, everyone. For those who don't know me, I'm Dan, and I've been Tom's best friend since we were eleven – which, as you'll hear, has been character-building for both of us."
- "I've been asked to keep this short, clean and sentimental. I'll manage two out of three."
- "When Tom asked me to be his best man I was honoured. Then he told me I'd have to make a speech, and I was mainly terrified."
2. The thank-yous
By tradition the groom has already thanked the hosts and raised a toast to the bridesmaids, and the best man replies on their behalf. Check the groom's speech beforehand so you don't repeat his list – there's nothing deflating like hearing the same thank-you twice. A short word for anyone overlooked, such as the ushers or whoever did the flowers, is a kind touch.
Sample line: "On behalf of the bridesmaids, thank you, Tom, for your kind words. They do look stunning – and I'm told they've been up since six making sure Priya did too."
3. The groom: who he really is
This is the heart of the speech, and where most best men go wrong by trying to cram in everything. Pick two or three stories, not seven. Each one should reveal something true about him: his loyalty, his hopeless sense of direction, his ability to turn a quick pint into an all-day adventure.
A useful test for every story: would the bride's grandmother understand it without context, and would she smile? If the answer to either is no, cut it or rework it.
Build each story the same way:
- Set the scene in one sentence. "In 2014, Tom decided to drive us to Newquay."
- Give the detail that makes it funny. "Four hours in, we noticed a smell of burning. He'd had the handbrake on since Bristol."
- Land on what it says about him. "And that's Tom: completely committed, utterly unstoppable, and occasionally on fire."
That third step is what turns a roast into a tribute. It shows the room that the teasing comes from affection.
4. The couple
Turn the focus to the bride or partner. How did they meet? When did you realise this was serious? Mention something specific that she brings out in him – perhaps he's tidier, calmer, or now owns a coat that isn't a football jacket. Never compare her to previous partners, not even as a compliment.
Sample line: "I knew it was serious when Tom cancelled five-a-side to go to a garden centre. Voluntarily. Priya, I don't know what you've done, but please keep doing it."
5. The sincere moment
Thirty seconds of genuine feeling, said plainly, will be the bit people remember most. You don't need poetry. "I've known Tom for twenty years, and I've never seen him happier than he's been since he met Priya" does more than any punchline. Slow down here, look at the couple, and let it land.
6. The toast
Ask everyone to stand, wait until they actually have (it takes longer than you think), then give a clear, simple toast: "To the bride and groom" or "To Tom and Priya". Then sit down promptly. Don't add "Oh, and one more thing…". For more ways to finish, see how to end a wedding speech.
What to leave out
- Exes, in any form, however funny the story.
- Stag-do stories that need "what happens on tour…" as a disclaimer.
- In-jokes that only your friendship group will get.
- Money, weight, previous jobs that ended badly, and the quirks of either family.
- Swearing, even mild. There will be children and grandparents.
- Long lists of anything.

Putting it together
Write a rough version of each section, then read the whole thing aloud with a timer. Most first drafts are twice as long as they should be. Cut the weakest story, tighten the thank-yous, and keep the sincere part. Then paste it into our room-safety check to catch anything risky, and the speech timer to confirm you're in the 5–7 minute sweet spot.
Frequently asked questions
Who speaks first at a UK wedding, the best man or the groom?
Traditionally the father of the bride speaks first, then the groom, then the best man. Many couples now change the order or add more speakers, so check with them.
How many jokes should a best man speech have?
Aim for a laugh roughly every 30–45 seconds in the story section, built from real anecdotes rather than one-liners. Three good stories beat ten borrowed jokes.
Should the best man read from notes?
Yes. Cue cards or a printed copy in large type are completely normal. Nobody expects you to memorise it, and notes stop you rambling.
Can there be two best men?
Yes. Two best men usually share one speech, alternating sections and telling one story together. Keep the combined length to about 7–8 minutes.
